How young can a Shaolin journey begin?
Wu Bao entered Shaolin Zhongwu in 2021 at the age of three. A few years later, he is one of the youngest stars of the school, a champion on competition floors and a familiar face on Chinese television. This film follows his summer at the campus in Dengfeng, beside the Shaolin Temple, as he trains, tours and grows with his fellow students.
Inside the film
The video opens with an aerial view of the campus at the foot of Mount Song, then follows Wu Bao and the campers through their daily routine: high kicks, horse-stance drills and forward tumbling under the watch of their coaches. Between training blocks, the coaches share watermelon with the children, comfort a tearful young student and correct postures with patient bilingual instructions. The film also shows Zen archery, study tours around the Shaolin Temple and vegetarian meals in the dining hall, a full picture of how young students live and learn kung fu in China.
A record already written
Wu Bao's path is not a normal one. At the Asian Martial Arts Competition in Singapore he won two gold medals and one silver, becoming the youngest gold medalist of the event. He took the Tongzigong (Shaolin children's flexibility) championship at the Hebei Handan Wushu Festival, won the group championship at the 2024 Shaolin Meritorious Service Competition, and joined the Shaolin warrior monk team in lifting the Star of Eastern Sports trophy in Shanghai. In 2024 he was crowned Shaolin Kung Fu Star, with appearances on CCTV and Henan Satellite TV, where he played the young poet Qu Yuan.
